 PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
JEFFREY GREENE, CCIM

Have you ever attended an event out of a sense of duty, only to find out that the speakers and venue were truly interesting, perhaps even inspiring?  I attended one of those on September 7 th.  Jeff Soclof, your Board Secretary had attended a tour of NEOMED, the Northeast Ohio Medical University and was so taken by it that he asked for the opportunity to share his experience with the rest of the Chapter. He then worked with the NEOMED staff to put together a panel that included the University President, Dr. Jay Gershen, Tony Manna, CEO of Signet, the developer, Joe Shafran CEO of Paran Management and John Wray, NEOMED's VP of Administration and Finance.

What followed was, as I noted above, truly interesting and for me at least an inspiration. NEOMED is unique in the circumstances of its creation.  We don't have the space to discuss NEOUCOM and how it became NEOMED or why it is located "in the middle of nowhere", suffice it to say that these circumstances led me to coin the phrase "Desperation breeds ingenuity."

A main takeaway from the event for me was Tony Manna's comment that he views development not in terms of real estate but in terms of a solution to a problem and the creation of an ecosystem to solve that problem.  The NEOMED campus is the result of a Public-Private Partnership that worked together to solve the difficulties of the State bureaucracy, funding of an unproven concept, location, I could go on.

These individuals and their organizations have created something remarkable that the community didn't even know it wanted or needed.  Rootstown now has a primary care health center, a business incubator, an physical therapy clinic, health club and boutique pharmacy located so close together that the staffs actually talk to and follow-up with one another. NEOMED has only begun to scratch the surface of what this unique set of circumstances was able to create, but if you ever have a chance to work on something that actually is transformational not just lip service to that ideal, then you know what they have created at NEOMED. If you want to know more go to neomed.edu or contact Daniel Blain, VP of Advancement at dblain@neomed.edu or 330.325.6261.  He will be glad to tell you more about this remarkable place.

SPONSOR SPOTLIGHT

This month, we are recognizing Sikora Law Firm as another new chapter sponsor.  Founded in 2004, they are a market leader in Ohio at providing real estate litigation and transactional legal services focused on the real estate industry.  Real estate brokers, developers, owners, tenants and property management companies typically retain Sikora Law to pursue or defend contract disputes, multi-party business litigation, and to complete real estate transactions.   The firm has offices in Columbus and Ohio.  For more information, go to www.sikoralaw.com.

RECENT EVENTS

In July, the Ohio Chapter hosted Mike Sikora, Esq from Omni Title & Sikora Law Firm.  He provided a lively and informative discussion regarding Ohio brokerage law.  Afterwards, attendees enjoyed a beautiful afternoon taking in a Toledo Mud Hens game from a very unique rooftop patio!  Thanks to Mike for a great session and to Leslie Biskner, CCIM for organizing a great event.

Mike Sikora was so popular, the Ohio chapter decided to bring him to Cincinnati in August to provide the same session.  Thanks again to Mike and to John Rickert and SVN Ricor for hosting.

In August, several officers from the Ohio Chapter and our chapter's administrator attended a training conference hosted by the CCIM Institute.  We are all looking forward to the new ideas and continued growth as a result of this training.

In September, the Ohio Chapter brought a very unique event to it's membership - a panel discussion and subsequent tour of NEOMED.  This is highlighted in the President's message but all of the attendees found it to be very enlightening and worthwhile.

TECH CORNER

Did you know that all CCIM members in good standing have access to a very powerful GIS system?  Business Analyst Online (BAO) is a cloud-based system that allows users to access demographic, psychographic and business information and produce high-quality maps in just minutes.  This system ordinarily costs several thousands of dollars but is all a part of your CCIM dues.  Next month, the Ohio Chapter will be sponsoring a 6 hour training in Cincinnati for this system.  It is hands on and designed for the end user and is open to marketing, research or office administrative positions that actually uses the system on behalf of a CCIM.  For more information, see the 'Upcoming Events' section of this newsletter.
