Speakers:
Garry J. Schnell, esq
- Slinde Nelson
Garry is a business transactional and tax attorney. His diverse background and practical approach to business and tax issues is very unique.
After receiving his LLM in Taxation from the University of Washington, Garry worked at two of the big four accounting firms, Deloitte & Touché and Ernst and Young, and gained a detailed understanding of not only the tax laws but of the day-to-day application of those laws in a real world accounting setting. Many tax lawyers know the law, very few know how to apply it in the real world to address the client's actual business needs.
Garry also performed securities and corporate work in Silicon Valley for the international Sidley Austin law firm. There he performed work on matters for large clients like Intel and Google.
Since arriving in Portland, Garry has worked for some of the largest law firms in the city and served as Chief Operating Officer and General Counsel for the Yoshida Group of companies. As General Counsel for a large private company, Garry learned about the practice of law from the other side of the table - from the point of view of the client. As Chief Operating Officer, he learned what it is like to run a large business and he applies those lessons consistently to his practice today.
Today, Garry brings breadth of experience in business and tax work to his clients. His unique skill set and educational background matches the credentials of his big firm peers, but his practical approach stands apart.
